Secondary Education (Biology)

This programme is in 2 parts, core science and an additional course in a science specialism; it is designed to equip students to teach all 3 sciences up to at least the end of Key Stage 3 (year 9) and a biology specialism subject to post-16 level; emphasis on practical teaching provides students with a broad range of teaching experience in different schools; successful completion leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) subject to satisfactory performance in skills tests and 60 credits at Master's level; the course includes an extensive 24 weeks of placement in 2 schools; at university sessions students discuss experiences with others on the course and learn more about the theory and practice of teaching.

Entry requirements

Degree or equivalent; approximately 50 per cent of degree content should be in subject to be taught; GCSE grade C or equivalent in English language and mathematics; applicants should gain recent experience, in school, with children of the age range that they wish to teach.

Sponsorship information

The Teaching Agency (TA) are offering a bursary to students who have received a certain level of achievement at undergraduate degree level; 1st Class: �9,000; 2.1: �5,000; UK students should also be eligible to receive a maintenance grant; prospective students are advised to contact the TA and Student Finance England to ascertain the financial support available.
