Secondary Education (Mathematics)
This course aims to introduce students to current developments in mathematics teaching; the emphasis is on general issues of classroom practice such as different teaching and learning styles, pupil misconceptions, mathematical games, investigative methods, whole class teaching, assessment; specific areas of challenge such as teaching the least and the most able, the use of information technology in the mathematics classroom and using and applying mathematics are also addressed; students on the course have the opportunity to experience a variety of teaching and learning styles including working together to develop information and communication resources, mathematical games and other classroom resources, as well as lesson and topic plans; successful completion leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) subject to satisfactory performance in skills tests and 60 credits at Master's level; the course includes an extensive 24 weeks of placement in 2 schools; at university sessions students discuss experiences with others on the course and learn more about the theory and practice of teaching.
Appropriate 2.2 Honours degree or equivalent; GCSE grade C or equivalent in English language and mathematics; A-levels relevant to the National Curriculum are preferred; applicants should gain recent experience, in school, with children of the age range that they wish to teach.
The Teaching Agency (TA) are offering a bursary to students who have received a certain level of achievement at undergraduate degree level; 1st Class: �20,000; 2.1: �15,000; 2.2: �12,000; UK students should also be eligible to receive a maintenance grant; prospective students are advised to contact the TA and Student Finance England to ascertain the financial support available.
