Information Security and Computer Forensics

The programme stimulates a rigorous and critical approach to understanding of network management, security threats and vulnerabilities such as viruses and malicious codes, developing network security report, collecting and securing virtual crime scene, understanding network security and developing an understanding of legal issues raised by the increased use of communication networks, such as the Internet; students learn the differences and contradictions between the requirements of national, supra-national and global legislative codes; the programme provides a sound theoretical and practical knowledge in technologies and techniques related to the information security and computer forensics; it is designed to develop and enhance the critical, analytical and intellectual abilities of the student that is focused on an approach of creative and independent thinking and the ability to communicate clearly and coherently at the appropriate level.

Entry requirements

A 1st degree (minimum 2.2) or equivalent in computing or degree with a substantial computing element; mature students with an extensive professional work history may be considered for entry via university's assessment of prior and experiential learning (APEL) scheme; for candidates whose 1st language is not English, a recognised English qualification is required, e.g. TOEFL 550 or IELTS 6.0.

Course modules

Modules include: Security management; information technology and internet law; seizure and examination of computer systems; computer security; dissertation.

Assessment methods

The modules are assessed through a combination of examinations and continuous assessment for each term. The dissertation will be assessed by the staff supervisor and a second internal assessor and will be subject to an oral examination.
