International Law and International Relations

This programme offers students the opportunity to engage with the role of law in international affairs. The programme places great emphasis on the inter-relations between international law and international relations on issues such as the regulation of the use of force, terrorism, the protection of the environment, racial and gender equality, national identity, globalisation, international human rights, post-colonialism and conflict resolution. It is primarily aimed at applicants with a background in law, public policy and international relations.

Entry requirements

Minimum 2.2 Honours degree in law, social sciences or humanities or another appropriate discipline (or recognised international equivalent). IELTs 6.5 with 6.0 in all four components.

Current issues and research in international law (core); critical international relations (core); dissertation (core); global environmental politics (optional); cultural encounters with international relations (optional); introduction to forced migration (optional); migration, citizenship and social policy (optional); law and policy in the middle east (optional); international human rights (optional); law of the world trade organization (optional); war and human rights (optional); critical perspectives on terrorism (optional); international criminal law (optional); democracy and the rule of law (optional); globalization (optional); islam and human rights (optional); international refugee law (optional); critical perspectives on counter-terrorism (optional); business and human rights (optional); contemporary islamic legal issues (optional); international law and the use of force (optional).

Assessment methods

Assessment is through coursework assignments; group presentations; reports; examinations.
