The programme aims to produce postgraduate students with a sound knowledge of both practical and theoretical aspects of the specialist area of immunology, with emphasis on its clinical applications; it aims to provide the necessary skills and knowledge to undertake individual and collaborative research in this field; the programme has been designed for students wishing to make a career in immunology; the cutting edge of research is primarily focussed at the molecular level using the recently developed, and constantly improving, techniques in molecular biology, genomics and proteomics; knowledge in this area is expanding rapidly leading to a better understanding of how the immune system responds to pathogens and how it can be manipulated for therapeutic purposes in procedures such as transplantation and vaccination; the focus of the programme is not simply on the state of current knowledge but also the methodology used in obtaining that knowledge, making use of recent research papers to inform class discussion.
A 2.2 Honours degree in a relevant subject with a significant component of biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology or genetics or a related biological science. Overall IELTS 6.0 with a minimum of 6.0 in writing, speaking, reading and listening (or recognised equivalent).
Modules include: Biomedical immunology; applied biomedical immunology; bioinformatics; research skills; research project.
You will be assessed through practical coursework and a theory exam. Coursework can take several forms, including laboratory work, data analysis, essays and oral presentations. The Research Skills module is assessed by coursework, including a presentation and research proposal. The Research Project is assessed mainly by a final written report, with contributions from a poster presentation and portfolio.
