This programme is designed to give students the opportunity to: demonstrate in-depth knowledge of bioinformatics and specialised areas of biotechnology and have an appreciation of the current range of theoretical and research understanding in those areas; conceptualise practice issues from alternative theoretical perspectives and synthesise, develop and communicate creative solutions; have a systematic awareness of knowledge and a critical awareness of current problems and new insights, much of which is at, or informed by, the forefront of molecular biology, bioinformatics and biotechnology; have a comprehensive understanding of the latest research techniques used in molecular biology, bioinformatics and biotechnology.

Entry requirements

A 2nd Class undergraduate Honours degree from a UK university or equivalent, in a relevant subject area e.g. microbiology, biochemistry, biotechnology or an equivalent qualification and/or experience; GCSE at grade C in mathematics and English (or equivalent); overseas students must demonstrate evidence of proficiency in written and spoken English by an IELTS score of 6.0.

Course modules

Modules include: Bioinformatics; applications of bioinformatics; research skills; molecular biology and disease; research project.

Assessment methods

Assessment is through laboratory work; data analysis; essays; oral presentations; written theory examinations; final written report; poster presentation; portfolio.
