Refugee Studies

The course involves analysis of key issues in the field of forced migration, with the option to specialise in the cultural, political, legal and psycho-social fields; the course adopts a multi-disciplinary approach to the study of forced migration, examines global and local dimensions of forced migration, encourages independent critical approaches to contemporary refugee issues, adopts a refugee-centred perspective, considers links between theoretical and applied/policy issues in forced migration, and encourages interest in refugee communities of East London.

Entry requirements

A 1st or 2nd Class Honours degree or equivalent in relevant subject area, or comparable professional or research experience. IELTS 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in writing, speaking, reading and listening (or recognised equivalent).

Course modules

Modules include: Introduction to forced migration; research methods; dissertation; plus options including: migration, citizenship and social policy; international human rights; international refugee law; psycho-social perspectives on forced migration; cultures of exile; the representation of refugees, migrants and diasporas in contemporary European cinema; exploring gender and forced migration; current issues in forced migration.

Assessment methods

Assessment is through coursework: essays, reports, presentations, research proposal, dissertation.
