Composition for Screen

The focus of these compositional investigations include film/TV music as well as current computer multi-media production practices, such as for YouTube "virals" and music videos, commercials, video games and web pages. Students become proficient in the technical, artistic and intellectual demands of composing music and sound for use in TV/radio/film and other media environments, such as the Internet. Students are able to experiment with new styles in media, and receive practical experience and timely feedback in collaborating with others. The programme also provides an opportunity for students to enhance business and management skills in the media industry as they pertain to music and sound.

Entry requirements

Admission to the degree is open to candidates with a 2.1 Honours degree or equivalent in a sound related discipline (such as music, sound engineering, acoustics, film, animation or art/design) or other relevant discipline (such as computer science, architecture, education, cognitive science, psychology or other qualification deemed appropriate by the Head of School); essential, however, and irrespective of the applicant's background, is significant experience in composition of a related musically creative activity (e.g. improvisation, sound installation, creative DJing, etc.); applicants whose 1st language is not English require: IELTS 7.0 (with at least 6.0 in each module); TOEFL internet-based test 100 (with at least 20 in each module); PTE(A) 67 (with at least 56 in each of the communicative skills sections); or CPE grade B or CAE grade A.

Assessment methods

Students create a music composition for a screen media environment along with an accompanying written essay component.
