Urban Strategies and Design

Jointly delivered by Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (ESALA) at the University of Edinburgh, and the School of the Built Environment (SBE) at Heriot-Watt University. This programme encourages the adoption of a comprehensive approach towards the delivery of socially-sustainable urban transformation, from local-specific to global-regional interventions; students will study the wide and diverse range of social, economic, and political processes that determine the contemporary urban environment. Students also acquire the tools and skills to propose urban projects of diverse scales and specificities; the programme is specifically focused on studying how urban design approaches respond to contemporary urban transformations; as often characterised by forms of urban restructuring in the global north, and rapid urban expansion in the global south.

Entry requirements

1st class or 2.1 undergraduate degree. Applicants whose 1st language is not English require: IELTS 7.0 (with at least 6.0 in each module); TOEFL internet-based test 100 (with at least 20 in each module); PTE(A) 67 (with at least 56 in each of the communicative skills sections); or CPE grade B or CAE grade A.

Course modules

This programme comprises 2 taught semesters followed by a supervised dissertation period over the summer. The 24-month part-time programme comprises 4 semesters followed by a supervised dissertation period over the summer. Modules include: urban design theory; sustainable design and development; urban design case studies; urban design for health and well being; an urban project; a dissertation. Options include: African Cities; Latin American Cities and many more.
