Human Osteoarchaeology

This programme offers participants the chance to gain knowledge and hands-on experience of human bones, providing a sound basis for both professional development and further research. Students who successfully complete the programme will be able to: identify and interpret human bone remains from archaeological sites; develop hypothesis testing skills; carry out relevant scientific analyses, often in cooperation with experts in other disciplines; engage in theoretical and methodological discussions relevant to osteoarchaeology; design research strategies based on transferable skills.

Entry requirements

A UK 1st Class or 2.1 Honours degree at undergraduate level or the international equivalent in a relevant discipline is normally required, either in archaeology or in another related subject (e.g. anthropology), or group of subjects in which archaeology figures prominently; applicants whose 1st language is not English require: IELTS 7.0 (with at least 6.0 in each module); TOEFL internet-based test 100 (with at least 20 in each module); PTE(A) 67 (with at least 56 in each of the communicative skills sections); or CPE grade B or CAE grade A.

Course modules

Students complete 6 modules: analytical methods in human osteology; bioarchaeological interpretation; human musculoskeletal anatomy; practical osteology; research sources and strategies in archaeology; skeletal pathology.
