This programme offers teaching across the whole discipline of classics: Greek and Latin literature and thought, Greek and Roman history, and classical art and archaeology. Students who follow this programme will gain: advanced knowledge of the archaeology/art and history of specific regions and periods of classical civilisation; an opportunity to study and analyse the literary significance of Greek and Latin texts and develop knowledge of current interpretation of them; an ability to comment in a detailed manner on passages from a selection of Greek and Latin; a developed knowledge of the Greek or Latin languages.

Entry requirements

A UK 1st Class or 2.1 Honours degree at undergraduate level or the international equivalent in a relevant discipline is normally required; applicants whose 1st language is not English require: IELTS 7.0 (with at least 6.0 in each module); TOEFL internet-based test 100 (with at least 20 in each module); PTE(A) 67 (with at least 56 in each of the communicative skills sections); or CPE grade B or CAE grade A.

Course modules

Methodology seminars in classics; professional skills in classics. In addition, students choose 4 courses from a list of options, which may include agricultural slavery in the Graeco-roman world; cicero and his correspondents; Egypt under the Ptolemies; elementary Greek 1 and 2; elementary Latin 1 and 2; Epicurus and epicureanism; Greek vase painting; power and culture in Hellenistic poetry; Hellenistic art; intermediate Greek 1 and 2; intermediate Latin 1 and 2; late antique visual culture; period in ancient history; roman archaeology; roman imperial monuments; roman funerary art; text seminar in Greek 1and 2; text seminar in Latin 1 and 2 ; the Hellenistic city; women in classical Greece.
