English Literature

Research interests include: the main periods of English and Scottish Literature, Medieval, Renaissance/Early Modern, Enlightenment, Romantic, and the 19th and 20th centuries, along with genres of literary analysis, such as, literary and critical theory, literary history; the history of the book; cultural studies; gender studies; post-colonial literature and American studies. The University is home to the Centre for Scottish Writing in the 19th Century.

Entry requirements

All applicants must submit a sample of their written work (3000-4000 words) in addition to their research proposal; all Creative Writing research applicants must hold a Master's degree in creative writing and must submit a 5000-word written sample which can can be prose, poetry or both and can consist of one or more pieces of work; for entry to the English Literature programme, applicants are normally expected to have achieved a mark of 65 per cent or above in their Master's dissertation as well as submitting a strong application including satisfactory research proposal, references and writing sample; MSc by Research English Literature applicants are expected to have achieved a mark of 65 per cent or higher in their undergraduate study, and 65 per cent or higher in any dissertation completed as part of their degree; applicants whose 1st language is not English require: IELTS 7.0 (with at least 6.0 in each module); TOEFL internet-based test 100 (with at least 20 in each module); PTE(A) 67 (with at least 56 in each of the communicative skills sections); or CPE grade B or CAE grade A.

Assessment methods

Students to undertake a research degree by writing 2 substantial essays of 7000 words on related topics of their own choice, before building on this with a dissertation of 15000 words; the MSc by Research English Literature 2 programme allows students to undertake a research project of their own devising, leading to a 30,000-word dissertation.
