English Literature (Romanticism)

Whether students' interests lie in major figures such as Wordsworth, Scott or Mary Shelley, or more neglected writers such as Joanna Baillie; or in the relationship between literature and philosophy, or literature and society, this programme offers students the opportunity to undertake a substantial piece of supervised independent research in their chosen field of romantic studies. The faculty can supervise research in any area of the field, and has particular strengths in philosophical approaches to romantic literature, in Irish and Scottish romanticism, and in the 18th-century background to romantic literature.

Entry requirements

A good 1st degree in relevant discipline, normally English literature; applicants must supply a sample of written work and a brief research proposal; applicants whose 1st language is not English require: IELTS 7.0 (with at least 6.0 in each module); TOEFL internet-based test 100 (with at least 20 in each module); PTE(A) 67 (with at least 56 in each of the communicative skills sections); or CPE grade B or CAE grade A.
