Modern Chinese Cultural Studies

This programme aims to provide students with the opportunity to develop their knowledge and understanding of cultural issues of modern China and to develop their analytical skill to apply theories of cultural studies and literary theories in the cultural context of China.

Entry requirements

A good BA Honours degree or equivalent qualification in Chinese; applicants whose 1st language is not English require: IELTS 7.0 (with at least 6.0 in each module); TOEFL internet-based test 100 (with at least 20 in each module); PTE(A) 67 (with at least 56 in each of the communicative skills sections); or CPE grade B or CAE grade A.

Course modules

Compulsory course: keywords of Chinese modernity. Option courses may include: contemporary Chinese literature; critical and cultural theory; gender, revolution and modernity in Chinese cinema; introduction to Chinese society and culture; literary criticism and history in modern china; text and context; theories and methods of literary.
