Theatre and Performance Studies

The programme examines the ways in which the complex relationships between play-text and performance have helped to create the longe duree of theatrical and dramatic history and theory. Students study a range of dramatic and quasi-dramatic material and discourse from different historical periods and cultures, and explore the issues contingent upon differing conceptions of the roles and perceived dangers of dramatic representation and performance in those cultural contexts. Students contextualize theatrical and dramatic writing in terms of its chronological, cultural and geographical specificities and students develop a familiarity with the variety of materials that are used to explore dramatic performance and culture, along with a critical understanding of some of the ways in which the theory and practice of performance have been conceptualised and understood by scholars, past and present.
