Gender and Culture

The programme will enable students to delineate a focus for the study of gender representation in literary, language and film cultures. The programme will attract students who aim to critically interrogate representations of gender and to engage with the diversity of approaches emerging from the field of gender and sexuality studies including those found in literature, language and film studies, feminism, critical theory, postmodernism, postcolonialism, psychoanalysis, French feminism, cultural studies, LGBT studies, queer studies. There is the opportunity for study spanning historical periods from the Middle Ages on, and various geographical locations such as Asian, European, Latin American, Middle Eastern, Russian and US contexts. The programme aims to give students the opportunity to extend their knowledge and understanding of gender in representation, familiarise them with current debates in gender studies, and give them the opportunity to focus in-depth in this field with experienced academic supervisors, and through training in academic research methodologies.
