Psychology of Individual Differences

This programme provides an opportunity to gain intensive training in the psychology of individual differences; there are 2 key subdivisions in the study of human individual differences: personality and mental abilities. The programme covers psychometric research methods, the foundations and correlates of human individual differences (including approaches involving information processing, brain-imaging, molecular genetics and biometric models), and the application of individual differences in personality to health.

Entry requirements

Applications are welcomed from psychological, biological and social scientists with an Honours degree (2.1 or above) or equivalent, for example, at least high average B or 3.4 out of 4 (North American); students whose 1st degree is in another subject area may be considered for admission: such applicants must have achieved a high standard in their undergraduate work and provide evidence that they are capable of converting to study in psychology; applicants whose 1st language is not English require: IELTS 7.0 (with at least 6.0 in each module); TOEFL internet-based test 100 (with at least 20 in each module); PTE(A) 67 (with at least 56 in each of the communicative skills sections); or CPE grade B or CAE grade A.

Course modules

Compulsory courses: seminar in cognitive ability or cognitive ageing and cognitive epidemiology; current topics in psychological research; multivariate statistics and methodology using r; professional and generic psychological research concepts and research design; psychological research skills; univariate statistics and methodology using r; seminar in personality. Option courses may include: advanced statistical methods: categorical and survival data; brain imaging in neuropsychology; clinical neuropsychology; emotional intelligence; evolutionary psychology; human genetics ; bioinformatics; working with specialist psychological data.
