Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

This programme is designed primarily for EFL, ESL and TESOL teachers, teacher trainers, head teachers and materials/curriculum/policy designers, it allows applicants to upgrade their knowledge of language, methodology and curriculum design, and shows them how to focus on the needs of the learner.

Entry requirements

A UK 2.1 Honours degree, or its international equivalent, in a relevant discipline is normally required; alternatively, students may be considered on the basis of employment or relevant experience; no previous teaching experience is required; applicants whose 1st language is not English require: IELTS 7.0 (with at least 6.0 in each module); TOEFL internet-based test 100 (with at least 20 in each module); PTE(A) 67 (with at least 56 in each of the communicative skills sections); or CPE grade B or CAE grade A.

Course modules

Core modules include: TESOL methodology; language and the learner; 2nd language teaching curriculum; research: foundations, assumptions and praxis; research methods (part 1) sources of knowledge; research methods (part 2) conceptualising; research methods (part 3) planning research. Optional modules include: evaluation and design of TESOL materials; language in use; language testing; online language learning; teaching text across borders; techniques and processes of teacher education and supervision for TESOL; TESOL for young learners; theory and practice of 2nd language learning; language awareness for 2nd language teachers; investigating individual learner differences; language and culture pedagogy.
