Community Education

Students work through the theoretical frameworks that underpin this area of educational practice, and learn to deal with complex ethical and professional issues; the students' learning experience includes a professional placement, which gives them the chance to apply their knowledge and methodologies, as well as the opportunity to forge vital links within the community education field.

Entry requirements

2.1 Honours degree or equivalent, in a relevant discipline, plus evidence of a community education background; employment or relevant educational experience will also be considered; a disclosure check is required; applicants whose 1st language is not English require: IELTS 6.5 (with at least 6.0 in each module); TOEFL internet-based test 92 (with at least 20 in each module); PTE 61 (with at least 56 in each of the communicative skills sections); or CPE grade C or CAE grade B.

Course modules

Core modules include: groupwork in context; professional practice (includes 9 week placement); politics, policy and professional identity in community education; community education: history, ideology and practice. Optional modules include: curriculum: context, change and development; international perspectives on education and training; nature of enquiry; philosophical foundations of educational theory, policy and practice; adult education and life long learning; child and adolescent development; computers in learning and teaching; educational leadership and school development; ethics and education; international perspectives on education and training; professionalism and the character of reflective practice.
