Education (Language, Theory, Practice and Literacy)

Students explore the theory and methods of language teaching, gain research skills, and focus on their choice of optional subjects, ranging from language testing and TESOL course design to media analysis and online language learning.

Entry requirements

The minimum entry requirement is a UK 2.1 Honours degree, or its international equivalent in a relevant discipline; alternatively, students may be considered on the basis of employment or relevant educational experience; applicants whose 1st language is not English require: IELTS 7.0 (with at least 6.0 in each module); TOEFL internet-based test 100 (with at least 20 in each module); PTE(A) 67 (with at least 56 in each of the communicative skills sections); or CPE grade B or CAE grade A.

Course modules

MSc core modules include: language and the learner; language in use; text discourse and language teaching; research methods (part 1) sources of knowledge; research methods (part 2) conceptualising research: foundations, assumptions and praxis; research methods (part 3) planning research. Optional modules include: language programme design; language testing; evaluation and design of TESOL materials; techniques and processes of teacher education and supervision for TESOL; TESOL for young learners; online language learning; approaches to media analysis; teaching texts across borders�from picture books to teenage fiction and film; theory and practice of 2nd language learning; language, education and society; 2nd language teaching curriculum; TESOL methodology; professional practice.
