Global Health and Infectious Diseases

This is a professional postgraduate qualification for biomedical, medical, public health, and veterinary personnel with an interest in global health and infectious diseases. The programme draws upon the parallels that exist between these diseases, learning from the challenges that exist and aiming to connect individuals to lay the foundations for a global community of practice; our aim is to provide advanced qualifications for biomedical, medical, public health, and veterinary personnel. The course is designed to instruct students in the practice of formulating and implementing strategies and programmes aimed at renewing and strengthening scientific knowledge development and building human capital.

Entry requirements

The minimum entry requirement is a UK 2.1 Honours degree, or its international equivalent, in biomedical, medical, public health and veterinary personnel or relevant bio-science topic; relevant work experience in the human or animal health sectors may be considered; applicants who fall below these entry requirements, but have relevant work experience may be considered on a case by case basis and may be admitted to the Certificate level only in the 1st instance; applicants whose 1st language is not English require: IELTS 6.5 (with at least 6.0 in each module); TOEFL internet-based test 92 (with at least 20 in each module); PTE 61 (with at least 56 in each of the communicative skills sections); or CPE grade C or CAE grade B.

Course modules

Core modules include: introduction to global health; understanding infectious diseases. Optional modules include: applied epidemiology and public health; global citizenship; globalisation and health; zoonotic diseases; challenges of drug development: past and future; childhood mortality; emerging infectious diseases; globalisation and health; introduction to GIS and spatial analysis; public health systems in the developed and developing world; public- private partnerships for health, scientific innovation and development.

Sponsorship information

The University offers 2 residential full-time Master's scholarships and 3 Master's scholarships for this programme; each full-time residential scholarship covers the overseas rate of tuition fee (maximum £15,450), while each distance learning scholarship has a total value over the duration of the programme of £9,000 which is deducted from the tuition fee for the entire part-time programme of study; candidates must have, or expect to obtain, a UK 1st Class or 2:1 Honours degree at undergraduate level or the international equivalent.
