Surgical Sciences

Students study the basic sciences as they relate to surgery; students are encouraged to follow individual pathways and make their own decisions about the patient's diagnosis and treatment in a safe virtual environment. Students study applied anatomy, applied pathology and microbiology and applied physiology; in year 3 students complete a Master's research project.

Entry requirements

Applicants require an undergraduate degree, or its international equivalent, in medicine is required; applicants must also demonstrate that they will be in a supervised clinical environment while they are studying; applicants whose 1st language is not English require: IELTS 6.5 (with at least 6.0 in each module); TOEFL internet-based test 92 (with at least 20 in each module); PTE 61 (with at least 56 in each of the communicative skills sections); or CPE grade C or CAE grade B.

Course modules

Core modules include: introduction to the ESSQ; cardiovascular and respiratory; neoplasia, immunology, microbiology and haematology; gastrointestinal 1; gastrointestinal 2 and transplant; colorectal; urology; locomotor and plastics; endocrinology, breast and skin; ENT/OMFS; preoperative assessment; principles of postoperative and critical care; principles of surgical management; surgical and communication skills; academic activity.
