The course covers preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through the organised efforts of society; students study how different scientific disciplines can be used to structure enquiry and develop the knowledge base for: research and professional practice in epidemiology; public health and social science; ethics and health; students choose to specialise in a number of areas of interest including: public health; epidemiology; medical sociology; health policy and health technology assessment.
Applicants require a UK 2.1 health undergraduate degree, or its international equivalent from a good university; for those with non-health related backgrounds or those who have been out of full-time education for some time, both academic qualifications and work experience will be considered; applicants whose 1st language is not English require: IELTS 7.0 (with at least 6.0 in each module); TOEFL internet-based test 100 (with at least 20 in each module); PTE(A) 67 (with at least 56 in each of the communicative skills sections); or CPE grade B or CAE grade A.
Courses include: introduction to epidemiology; introduction to qualitative research; introduction to systematic reviews; introduction to statistics; introduction to research ethics. Optional modules include: advanced protocol development; clinical trials; communicable disease control and environmental health; epidemiology for public health; extended epidemiology; further statistics; genetic epidemiology; global burden of mental illness; health promotion; introduction to global health; palliative and end of life care in local and global contexts; public health ethics; public health research: international issues; qualitative research in health; resource allocation and health economics; sociology of health and illness; statistical modelling.
