Quantitative Genetics and Genome Analysis
This course is a suite of programmes offering specialist routes in animal breeding and genetics, evolutionary genetics, or human complex trait genetics; students who are uncertain about how they intend to specialise are recommended to apply to this programme, and may change their degree selection to 1 of the specialist degrees during the year.
The minimum entry requirement is a UK 2.1 degree, or its international equivalent, in biological or biomedical sciences, medicine, agriculture or animal sciences, with evidence of quantitative skills; an alternative is a background in mathematics, statistics or physics with evidence of an interest in genetics; applicants whose 1st language is not English require: IELTS 6.5 (with at least 6.0 in each module); TOEFL internet-based test 92 (with at least 20 in each module); PTE 61 (with at least 56 in each of the communicative skills sections); or CPE grade C or CAE grade B.
Core modules include: population and quantitative genetics; genetic interpretation; statistics and data analysis; linkage and association in genome analysis; mini research project; either bioinformatics or molecular phylogenetics. Optional modules include: quantitative genetic models; molecular evolution; genetics of human complex traits; animal genetic improvement; evolution and climate change; functional genomic technologies.
NERC Advanced Course Studentships for UK nationals (full award) and other EU nationals (tuition fees only); awarded on the basis of open competition.
