Animal Breeding and Genetics

This programme provides training in genetics and quantitative skills which are increasingly required by industry and research to exploit the explosion of information in genomics; students gain the knowledge and skills required to apply quantitative genetics theory to practical problems in the animal science industry, and to undertake research in quantitative genetics, genome analysis and animal improvement.

Entry requirements

The minimum entry requirement is normally a UK 2.1 degree, or its international equivalent, in biological or biomedical sciences, medicine, agriculture or animal sciences, with evidence of quantitative skills; alternatively a background in mathematics, statistics or physics with evidence of an interest in genetics will be considered; students with less than the minimum qualification who can show sufficient additional relevant experience will also be considered; applicants whose 1st language is not English require: IELTS 6.5 (with at least 6.0 in each module); TOEFL internet-based test 92 (with at least 20 in each module); PTE 61 (with at least 56 in each of the communicative skills sections); or CPE grade C or CAE grade B.

Course modules

Compulsory courses: population and quantitative genetics; genetic interpretation; linkage and association in genome analysis; animal genetic improvement; research proposal; dissertation. Option courses: statistics and data analysis; molecular phylogenetics; bioinformatics; molecular evolution; genetics of human complex traits; quantitative; genetic models; functional genomic technologies; evolution and; climate change; animal genetic improvement; evolutionary quantitative genetics.
