Environmental Sustainability

The environmental sustainability of society is the major challenge facing humanity in the 21st century and an increasingly important issue for international policy, public agencies and other organisations. In this programme, students are encouraged to think across different disciplines, providing the opportunity to blend scientific, socio-economic and policy perspectives for a stronger understanding of sustainability and how it can be achieved.

Entry requirements

A UK 2.1 degree (or its international equivalent) in a biological, environmental or physical science, geography, social science, economics or other relevant subject. English language requirements: IELTS 7.0 (with no score lower than 6.0 in each section); TOEFL-iBT: Total 100 (with no score lower than 20 in each section). A degree from an English speaking university may be accepted in some circumstances.

Course modules

Core courses: principles of environmental sustainability; case studies in sustainable development; dissertation. Suggested option courses may include: Atmospheric quality and global change; development (principles and practices); ecosystem services 1 (ecosystem dynamics and functions); energy and society; energy policy and politics; environmental impact assessment; forests and environment; foundations in ecological economics; global environmental politics; human dimensions of environmental change and sustainability; integrated resource management; marine systems and policies; participation in policy and planning; political ecology; project appraisal; sustainability of food production; understanding environment and development; values and the environment; waste reduction and recycling.

Assessment methods

Dissertation.

Environmental Sustainability has historically secured several £5,000 Head of School Scholarships.
