Environmental Protection and Management

This programme addresses the issues affecting the Earth. It provides students with in- depth knowledge of natural resource management and the processes that give rise to environmental degradation and pollution problems.

Entry requirements

A UK 2.1 degree, or its international equivalent, in a biological, environmental or physical science, geography, engineering, economics or other relevant subject. Applicants with a UK 2.2 degree, or its international equivalent, may also be considered upon evidence of relevant work experience or career change. English language requirements: IELTS 7.0 (with no score lower than 6.0 in each section); TOEFL-iBT total 100 (with no score lower than 20 in each section). A degree from an English speaking university may be accepted in some circumstances.

Course modules

Core courses: Atmospheric quality and global change; analysing the environment; land use/environmental interactions; analysing the environment study tour; dissertation. Suggested option courses may include: Archives (history, geography, politics); carbon capture and transport; carbonate sequence stratigraphy; climate change and corporate strategy; ecosystem services 1 (ecosystem dynamics and functions); ecosystem services 2 (ecosystem values and management); encountering cities; environmental geochemistry; environmental impact assessment; forests and environment; foundations in ecological economics; human dimensions of environmental change and sustainability; hyperspectral remote sensing; integrated resource management; integrated resource planning; introduction to environmental modelling; marine systems and policies; participation in policy and planning; political ecology; principles of environmental sustainability; principles of geographical information science; project appraisal; soil protection and management; soil science concepts and application; sustainability of food production; understanding environment and development; values and the environment; waste reduction and recycling; water resource management.
