Geographical Information Science and Archaeology

This programme has been designed to provide an educational opportunity in exploring the complementary disciplines of geographical information science (GIS) and archaeology, providing an intensive educational opportunity to equip students for a career at the exciting interface of archaeology and information and survey technologies. The programme aims to develop and improve the understanding of the field of GIS by mixing strong practical skills with fundamental theoretical knowledge that supports the application of GIS skills in any software environment.

Entry requirements

A UK 2.1 degree, or its international equivalent. A UK 2.2 or equivalent may also be accepted with relevant industrial or business experience. English language requirements: IELTS 7.0 (with no score lower than 6.0 in each section); TOEFL-iBT total 100 (with no score lower than 20 in each section); a degree from an English speaking university may be accepted in some circumstances.

Course modules

Core courses: Introduction to spatial analysis; spatial modelling; research practice and project planning; principles of GIS for archaeologists; dissertation. Suggested option courses may include: Advanced spatial database methods; archaeology and environment; Byzantine archaeology (the archaeology of the Byzantine empire and its neighbours AD 500-850); distributed GIS; frontiers in archaeology (research seminars); fundamentals for remote sensing; further spatial analysis; geovisualisation; hyperspectral remote sensing; introduction to radar remote sensing; object orientated software engineering (spatial algorithms); object oriented software engineering principles; theoretical archaeology.
