This course offers specialist knowledge in the design, implementation and use of computing systems ranging from the components of a single processor to computer networks as vast as the internet. Students gain a solid foundation in theoretical understanding and learn practical techniques that can be used in varied career settings.
The minimum entry requirement is a UK 2.1 degree, or its international equivalent, in informatics, artificial intelligence, cognitive science, computer science, electrical engineering, linguistics, mathematics, philosophy, physics or psychology, plus experience in computer programming; applicants whose 1st language is not English require: IELTS 6.5 (with at least 6.0 in each module); TOEFL internet-based test 92 (with at least 20 in each module); PTE 61 (with at least 56 in each of the communicative skills sections); or CPE grade C or CAE grade B.
Core modules include: informatics research review; informatics research proposal; introduction to Java programming; dissertation. Optional modules include: data integration and exchange; machine learning and pattern recognition; probabilistic modelling and reasoning; extreme computing; bioinformatics; computer graphics; computer networking; design and analysis of parallel algorithms; human-computer interaction; parallel architectures; parallel programming languages and systems; software architecture, process and management; algorithmic game theory and its applications; information theory; computer algebra; computational complexity; language semantics and implementation; querying and storing XML.
