Informatics (Centre for Doctoral Training in Data Science)

Data science asks how can we efficiently find patterns in vast streams of data; many research areas are converging on this problem, including machine learning, databases, statistics, optimisation, natural language processing, computer vision, and speech processing; this programme allow students to specialise and perform advanced research in one of these areas, while gaining breadth and practical experience throughout data science.

Entry requirements

A good 1st degree in computer science, mathematics, physics, engineering, or a related discipline. Applicants coming directly from a Bachelor's or Master's degree are welcome. If English is not the 1st language, one of the following qualifications as evidence of spoken and written English: IELTS academic module, 6.5 (with score no lower than 6.0 in each section); TOEFL internet-based test, total 92 (with no score lower than 20 in each section); PTE 61 (with no score lower than 56 in each section); CPE grade C; CAE grade B.

Course modules

Research areas include: machine learning applied to problems in biology, astronomy, computer science, engineering, health care, and e-commerce; database theory and technology for managing unstructured data and for maintaining trust in data; big data and management of streaming data; management of unstructured data, including natural language processing, speech processing, and computer vision.
