Operational Research with Risk

This programme shows students how to use mathematical techniques to tackle real-life problems ranging from scheduling flights and routing mobile phone calls to managing investments and minimising risks; risk analysis deals with the assessment and management of risk from unlikely but costly or distressing events.

Entry requirements

A 1st or 2.1 Honours degree or equivalent in a numerate discipline e.g. mathematics, engineering, computer science, physical or biological sciences, economics or business; applicants whose 1st language is not English require: IELTS 6.5 (with at least 6.0 in each module); TOEFL internet-based test 92 (with at least 20 in each module); PTE 61 (with at least 56 in each of the communicative skills sections); or CPE grade C or CAE grade B.

Course modules

Core modules include: computing for OR and finance; fundamentals of optimisation; fundamentals of OR; methodology, modelling and consulting skills; probability and statistics; simulation; stochastic modelling. Optional modules include: credit scoring and data mining; financial risk management; stochastic optimization; the analysis of survival data; statistical modelling; risk analysis.

Sponsorship information

One postgraduate scholarship of 1,500 per annum is available each year to supplement a more substantial award for an outstanding postgraduate student in Operational Research.
