Statistics and Operational Research

This programme will prepare students for work in areas such as the medical and health industry, the government, the financial sector and any other area where modern statistical tools and OR techniques are used. Students also develop the wider skills required for solving problems, working in teams and time management. Students are also able to identify appropriate statistical or operational techniques, which can be applied to practical problems and will acquire extensive skills of modelling using the packages R for Statistics and Arena for simulation; in addition, students acquire the ability to use high-level applications in Excel.

Entry requirements

The minimum entry requirement is a 2.1 Honours degree, or its international equivalent, with a significant mathematics and statistics component; applicants whose 1st language is not English require: IELTS 6.5 (with at least 6.0 in each module); TOEFL internet-based test 92 (with at least 20 in each module); PTE 61 (with at least 56 in each of the communicative skills sections); or CPE grade C or CAE grade B.

Course modules

Core modules include: computing for statistics; fundamentals of operational research; fundamentals of optimisation; likelihood and generalised linear models; methodology, modelling and consulting skills; simulation; statistical regression models; statistical theory; stochastic modelling. Optional modules include: analysis of survival data; categorical data analysis; clinical trials; computing for operational research and finance; credit scoring and data mining; data analysis; genetic epidemiology; large scale optimisation; machine learning and pattern recognition; nonparametric regression; operational research in the airline industry; operational research in the telecommunications; risk analysis; stochastic models in biology; stochastic optimization; time series analysis and forecasting.
