The programme provides advanced level training for those who are pursuing a PhD in Economics at Essex or in any other top economics department around the world. The programme focuses on three core areas of economics: Microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics. After successfully completing the course, students will have an in-depth and solid foundation in the main theoretical frameworks and methods used in the modern microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics. The course will develop and improve the following skills: analytical and mathematical techniques, micro and macroeconomic modelling and understanding, statistical and econometric analysis of complex time-series and panel data.
Our applicants should have a 1st degree (or equivalent) in economics. Degrees from other subjects may be considered where there is evidence of some mathematical training, statistical background and relevant work experience, although you will be required to submit a personal statement with your application form. If English is not your 1st language, then we require IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.
Modules include: Advanced microeconomics; estimation and inference in econometrics; macroeconomics; mathematical methods; microeconomics; time series econometrics; dissertation.
Assessment methods include examination, coursework and dissertation.
