A balance of solid statistical theory and practical application, this course builds your knowledge in all areas of statistics, data analysis and probability. You also have the opportunity to specialise, taking optional modules in survey methodology, operations research, applied mathematics, computer science and more. The course culminates in an individual research project, applying the knowledge you have gained to make a valuable addition to your portfolio.

Entry requirements

An applicant should hold a 2.2 or better Honours bachelor degree and should have an interest in computing, data analysis, mathematics and statistics. Our English language requirement for international students is IELTS 6.0 overall or above, with a minimum component mark 5.5 or above. Students with an overall IELTS 5.5 are also accepted conditional on taking a university short pre-sessional English programme. Course modules

Core modules: Dissertation; research methods; compulsory modules: applied statistics; Bayesian computational statistics; modelling experimental data; statistical methods; stochastic processes. Optional modules: cloud technologies and systems; contemporary debates in sociology; epidemiology; financial modelling; introduction to survey methods; machine learning and data mining; nonlinear programming; panel data methods; research methods in finance: empirical methods in finance; survey sampling, non-response and inference; time series econometrics.

Assessment methods

Your balance of modules and research varies according to the subject but, typically, your research counts for 60 credits and there are 120 credits of modules, varying from 10 to 40 credits each. (If you are from the EU, then our Master's courses are regarded as second-cycle qualifications under the Bologna Declaration and consist of 90 ECTS credits).
