Applied Linguistics with English for Academic Purposes

This course provides students with the opportunity to combine English language and academic skills with key areas of applied linguistics. The applied linguistics modules examine topics related to 2nd language acquisition and learning, and the principles of teaching English as a foreign language; they also deal with the relationship between learning a 1st and a 2nd language; language aptitude; language teaching methods; techniques; materials and testing; successful completion normally qualifies students for entry to an appropriate Masters-level course in our department of language and linguistics.

Entry requirements

Our applicants should have a good 1st Honours degree, minimum of lower 2nd Class, or equivalent 3-year higher education qualification, from a recognised institution. If English is not your 1st language, then we require a minimum score of IELTS 5.5, with 5.5 minimum in all components. Decisions on your academic qualifications will be made in close consultation with the Department.

Course modules

Modules include: English for academic purposes; research methods; 2nd language learning; structure of English; advanced English for academic purposes; extended English for academic purposes project.

Assessment methods

Combination of written coursework, end-of-term tests, practical and laboratory work (where appropriate) and end-of-year exams. During the summer, you will work on a dissertation or individual project included in your final grade.
