Computer Science with English for Academic Purposes

This course is designed to develop our students knowledge and skills in computer programming, whilst also enhancing their English language and academic skills; successful completion normally qualifies students for entry to an appropriate Master's-level course in our school of computer science and electronic engineering.

Entry requirements

Our applicants should have a good 1st Honours degree, minimum of lower 2nd Class, or equivalent 3-year higher education qualification, from a recognised institution. If English is not your 1st language, then we require a minimum score of IELTS 5.5, with 5.5 minimum in all components. Decisions on your academic qualifications will be made in close consultation with the Department.

Course modules

Modules include: English for academic purposes; programming in Java; advanced English for academic purposes; business information systems; critical thinking; extended English for academic purposes project; computer security; databases and information retrieval; information computer technology systems integration and management; operating systems; web application programming.

Assessment methods

Combination of written coursework, end-of-term tests, practical and laboratory work (where appropriate) and end-of-year exams. During the summer, you will work on a dissertation or individual project included in your final grade.
