Philosophy with English for Academic Purposes

This course is designed for students who need to improve their language and academic skills as well as their subject knowledge in philosophy before going onto a Master's course. Successful completion of the Graduate Diploma at the required level will normally qualify students for entry to an appropriate Master's level course in the School of Philosophy and Art History.

Entry requirements

Our applicants should have a good 1st Honours degree, minimum of Lower 2nd Class, or equivalent 3-year higher education qualification, from a recognised institution. Candidates whose 1st language is not English should have a minimum score of IELTS 5.5, with 5.5 minimum in all components. Decisions on your academic qualifications will be made in close consultation with the Department.

Course modules

Core modules: Conceptual foundations of modernity; ethics; English for academic purposes; advanced English for academic purposes; critical thinking; extended English for academic purposes project. Optional modules include: 19th-century continental philosophy; 20th-century continental philosophy; contemporary political philosophy; Freud and the philosophy of the unconscious; joint seminar in philosophy and law; Kant's revolution in philosophy; Nietzsche; philosophy and medical ethics; philosophy of mind; topics in the philosophy of religion.

Assessment methods

Combination of written coursework, end-of-term tests, practical and laboratory work (where appropriate) and end-of-year exams. During the summer, students work on a dissertation or individual project included in their final grade.
