European Union Commercial Law

Our course allows students to acquire a specialist's knowledge and understanding of the law of the EU. They develop critical, analytical and research skills, ensuring they are capable of working in the field of EU law as a: lawyer; regulator; legal adviser or researcher with government or international and business organisations (including the EU administration); and as an academic.

Entry requirements

Our applicants should have a 1st, 2.1 or high 2.2 degree in law, or in a related discipline, and/or substantial practical experience in a field related to the course. If English is not your 1st language, then we require IELTS 6.5 with at least 6.5 for the writing component.

Course modules

Core modules: Foundation essay for European union law; dissertation. Optional modules include: Approaches to legal theory; business and human rights; contemporary issues in human rights and cultural diversity; cybercrime; data protection; electronic products and the world trading system; EU company law; European competition law; European Union employment law; European Union law and human rights; freedom of expression, privacy and the media; international commercial and business law (models, principles and tools); international commercial dispute resolution 1; international financial law; international sales contracts and carriage of goods; international trade finance law; international trade, investment and human rights; legal aspects of electronic commercial transactions; legal research and the English legal system; marine insurance 1; public international trade law; the economics of the European Union; the enlargement of the European Union; the legal order of the European Union; work-based project.

Assessment methods

Combination of written coursework, end-of-term tests, practical and laboratory work (where appropriate) and end-of-year exams. During the summer, students work on a dissertation or individual project included in their final grade.
