European Union Commercial Law with English for Academic Purposes

This course is designed for students who need to improve their language and academic skills as well as their subject knowledge in law before going onto a Master's course. Successful completion of the Graduate Diploma at the required level will normally qualify students for entry to an appropriate Master's level course in the School of Law.

Entry requirements

Our applicants should have a good 1st Honours degree, minimum of lower 2nd Class, or equivalent 3-year higher education qualification, from a recognised institution. If English is not your 1st language, then we require a minimum score of IELTS 5.5, with 5.5 minimum in all components. Decisions on your academic qualifications will be made in close consultation with the Department.

Modules include: English for academic purposes; law of the European Union; advanced English for academic purposes; critical thinking; extended English for academic purposes project; legal research and the English legal system; advanced legal advice case work; animal protection and wildlife law; banking law; clinical legal education (law placement); commercial contract law; commercial property 1; commercial property 2; company law; competition law; consumer contract law; contemporary issues in criminal justice (law, policy and practice); criminal law; criminology; current issues in UK human rights law; cybercrime; employment law and practice; equity and trusts; European human rights law; family law; intellectual property law; international trade law; internet law and regulation; investigating miscarriages of justice; jurisprudence 1; land law; law of evidence; law of the European Union; medicine and the law 1; medicine and the law 2; music law; project (law); public law 2; public law in action; race equality law 1; the conflict of laws; the protection of human rights in the UK; tort law; understanding judges.

Assessment methods

Combination of written coursework, end-of-term tests, practical and laboratory work (where appropriate) and end-of-year exams. During the summer, students work on a dissertation or individual project included in their final grade.
