International Commercial and Business Law

This is a specialist course covering the cutting edge developments and debates related to the traditional and emerging forms of legal governance of domestic, European and international commercial and consumer markets. Students will improve their knowledge of the key theoretical and practical issues in this field; as well as analysis, evaluation, problem solving and oral and written communication skills. The course covers the various ways in which legal and soft law rules and codes regulate goods, services, internet activities, data protection, consumer protection, the environment; as well as the ways in which good corporate governance and competitive markets are promoted.

Entry requirements

Our applicants should have a 1st, 2.1 or high 2.2 degree in law, or in a related discipline, and/or substantial practical experience in a field related to the course. If English is not your 1st language, then we require IELTS 6.5 overall, with a minimum score of 5.5 for each component, except 6 in writing.

Course modules

Core modules: Foundation essay (international commercial and business law); international commercial and business law (models, principles and tools). Optional modules include: Approaches to legal theory; business and human rights; contemporary issues in human rights and cultural diversity; cybercrime; data protection; electronic products and the world trading system; EU company law; European competition law; European Union employment law; European Union law and human rights; freedom of expression, privacy and the media; international commercial and business law (models, principles and tools); international commercial dispute resolution 1; international financial law; international sales contracts and carriage of goods; international trade finance law; international trade, investment and human rights; legal aspects of electronic commercial transactions; legal research and the English legal system; marine insurance 1; public international trade law; the economics of the European Union; the enlargement of the European Union; the legal order of the European Union; work-based project.

Assessment methods

Combination of written coursework, end-of-term tests, practical and laboratory work (where appropriate) and end-of-year exams. During the summer, students work on a dissertation or individual project included in their final grade.
