Creative Writing

This course offers an approach to the practice of writing with emphasis on innovation and experiment; our modules seek to deepen students' knowledge of literary tradition, and different modes and genres, in order to develop their practical skills of expression and invention; with planned readings and writing exercises in class, students expand their techniques, as well as their critical judgement of their own work; our creative writing teaching team has a breadth of experience in the literatures of different cultures and different forms; the current teaching staff include internationally acclaimed novelist and critic Marina Warner; poet and short story writer Philip Terry; lyric writer Adrian May; poet, playwright and novelist Glyn Maxwell; and award-winning playwrights Elizabeth Kuti and Jonathan Lichtenstein; less formally, we have readings, talks and visiting writers and also currently host two Royal Literary Fund Fellows, who are professional writers on hand to help our students develop their writing on a 1-to-1 basis.
