Our department of literature, film, and theatre studies offers supervision for literature in all fields of staff research interest, which includes a number of expertise in different literatures and in varying approaches to literature, covering most aspects of early modern and modern writing in English and a number of other languages; the titles of just a few of the books published by members of our department in 2010 and 2011 give some indication of the extent and range of our research interests: Cuba's Wild East: Towards a Literary Geography of Oriente; The Intimate and the Extimate: Violence and Gender in the Globalized World; After the Fall: American Literature Since 9/11; a number of our graduates have gone on to undertake successful careers as writers; other past students are now established as scholars, university lecturers, teachers, publishers, to name but a few.
Master's degree or equivalent, in relevant subject area; IELTS 7.0.
Dissertation; research methods in literary and cultural analysis. Options: 'there is a continent outside my window' : United States and Caribbean literatures in dialogue; adaptation; African American literature; documentary and the avant-garde film and video; dramatic structure; film and video production workshop; interpretation of myth; issues in film theory and history; literature and the environmental imagination: from east to west in 19th & 20th c poetry and prose; memory maps: practices in psychogeography; Oulipian practice; poetic practice; realism and the 19th century novel: from Austen to Chopin; research methods in literary and cultural analysis; Shakespeare: reading Shakespeare for research; Shakespearean performance history; the new nature writing; the novel; the tale: tellings and re-tellings; the wild east; translating myth; US modernism and after; us nationalism and regionalism; women filmmakers; writing magic; writing the novel.
Combination of written coursework, end-of-term tests, practical and laboratory work (where appropriate) and end-of-year exams. During the summer, you will work on a dissertation or individual project included in your final grade.
