Environment and Resource Management
The MSc Environment and Resource Management focuses on the analysis, conservation, protection and management of natural resources, and the institutions and policies that shape human actions. It combines the expertise of the School of Biological Sciences with that of the Essex Business School, and brings in interdisciplinary experts from the Essex Sustainability Institute. The course will equip students with an understanding of key issues and debates around ecological sustainability, governance and corporate ethics and responsibility. Our course is suited to graduates from all disciplinary backgrounds and gives a thorough training in the principles and practices of resource management. Your learning experience will involve the Essex Sustainability Institute, which is a platform for interdisciplinary sustainability-focused teaching and research collaboration across the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities at Essex. Our aim is to facilitate research and knowledge transfer on global environmental challenges, building strong links with private and public organisations, as well as the local community. Graduates are equipped for further academic progression or employment in the fields of environmental management and regulation, research and policy.
Our applicants should have a lower 2nd Class Honours degree, or equivalent, in a relevant subject. If English is not your 1st language, then we require IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.
Core modules: Dissertation; foundations of management and marketing; management (principles and practices); managing for ethics and sustainability; natural resources; research skills and data analysis; sustainability. Optional modules include: Conservation management and practice; creativity and organisation; international environment of business; international environmental politics; managing across cultures; pollution (impacts and management); tropical marine resources.
Within both Schools, we teach using a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars, fieldwork, independent reading and research projects Regular assessment is by coursework, presentations, case studies, group work, tests and examinations.
