Computer Networks and Security

This course aims to give our students an in-depth knowledge of the principles and practice of computer networking, covering topics such as: current and future internet protocols; programming network services; and so on; we offer a strong practical element through laboratory programmes in software engineering and in computer networking.

Entry requirements

Our applicants should have a 1st, 2.1 or high 2.2 degree, or equivalent, in computer science, electronic engineering or a related discipline. If English is not your 1st language, then we require IELTS 6.0, or equivalent.

Course modules

Core modules: Computer security; IP networking and applications; networking principles; networks laboratory; professional practice and research methodology; programming in java; project and dissertation. Optional modules include: Advanced transport networks; advanced web technologies; cloud technologies and systems; computer security; converged networks and services; cryptography and codes; IP networking and applications; management and delivery of multimedia; mobile and social application programming; mobile communications; network security and cryptographic principles; networking principles; networks laboratory; programming in java.

Assessment methods

Combination of written coursework, end-of-term tests, practical and laboratory work (where appropriate) and end-of-year exams. During the summer, you will work on a dissertation or individual project included in your final grade.
