Public Health

This course is designed to give students the knowledge, analytic and practical skills needed to fulfill a leadership role in public health, whether in the UK (e.g. local councils or the NHS) or the rest of the world. It is a useful introduction to the academic part of the syllabus for the MFPHM part 1 examination. Our programme aims: to provide students with a systematic and critical understanding of the key concepts underlying public health; to ensure that they develop their understanding of the relationships between relevant academic theories and practice in their profession in order to use their academic learning to critique and enhance their own professional practice; to provide them with skills to access and critically appraise public-health evidence to develop their own evidence-based practice; to give them the opportunity to reflect upon the processes of policy-making, planning and delivering services; to enhance their understanding of the essential principles of research design and to conduct an extensive piece of independent research; and to ensure they acquire a range of transferable employment related skills.

Entry requirements

Honours degree in a relevant dsicipline; professional experience and qualifications may also be considered; IELTS 6.5.

Course modules

Core modules include: Health promotion; topics in public health; dissertation; epidemiology; health needs assessment and priority setting. options: research design and critical appraisal; accredited prior learning; accredited prior learning; commissioning for health and social care; communicable disease control; data collection, analysis and interpretation; directed studies in public health; introduction to health economics; legal and ethical issues; migration and public health; qualitative health research; statistical analysis; work based learning module.
