Discrete Mathematics and its Applications

This course covers many aspects of discrete mathematics and their potential use in practice; the importance of this area was emphasised in the recent international review of mathematics in the UK but our course also provides students with options in: optimisation, machine learning/data mining and statistics; key employment skills can be gained from this course, including: analytic reasoning; problem solving; techniques of discrete mathematics and an understanding of application areas of these techniques; algorithm design and implementation; and data analysis.

Entry requirements

Our applicants should have a 1st, 2.1 or high 2.2 degree, or equivalent. Individual course requirements can vary. If English is not your 1st language, then we require IELTS 6.0 or equivalent.

Course modules

Core modules: Combinational optimisation; cryptography and codes; graph theory; mathematical research techniques using Matlab; stochastic processes; research methods; dissertation. Optional modules include: Applied statistics; Bayesian computational statistics; evolutionary computation and genetic programming; game theory and applications; machine learning and data mining; mathematics of portfolios; modelling experimental data; nonlinear programming; partial differential equations.

Assessment methods

Combination of written coursework, end-of-term tests, practical and laboratory work (where appropriate) and end-of-year exams.
