Accounting and Finance

This course develops student's understanding of advanced accounting together with finance topics and methods. Compulsory modules allow students to critically discuss many of the recent developments in both theoretical and empirical approaches to accounting and corporate finance. Students are also able to pursue specialist interests with up to 2 optional modules. Furthermore, in order to prepare students for writing their dissertation, there is a full year module on research methodologies and methods, which includes both quantitative and qualitative approaches to empirical research. Although this is a self-contained course, if students successfully complete students are encouraged to continue their academic studies by applying for a PhD.

Entry requirements

Our applicants should have a 1st, 2.1 or high 2.2 degree, or equivalent, in accounting or a related discipline. If English is not your 1st language, then we require IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.

Course modules

Core modules: Dissertation; research methods and methodologies in accounting and management; research methods in finance (empirical methods in finance); issues in financial reporting; portfolio management; postgraduate mathematics preparation. Optional modules include: Accounting and professionalism; asset pricing; audit theory; bank strategy and risk; behavioural finance; cases in corporate governance; corporate finance; derivative securities; e-commerce; exchange rates and international finance; financial modelling; fixed income securities; industry expert lectures in finance; international financial reporting; international management accounting; issues in financial reporting; management accounting; modern banking; portfolio management; postgraduate mathematics preparation; risk management; strategy and accounting; trading global financial markets.

Assessment methods

Assessment is by coursework, presentations, case studies, group work, tests and examinations, culminating in the submission of a 15,000-word dissertation.
