Financial Engineering and Risk Management

This course interests students who want to follow advanced, contemporary study in financial engineering and risk management; the content and structure of our course is ideally suited for those wishing to work in: commercial, investment and central banks; hedge funds; regulatory authorities; credit rating agencies; and other similar organisations.

Entry requirements

Our applicants should have a 1st, 2.1 or high 2.2 degree, or equivalent, in finance, economics or business. We also welcome applications from candidates with any science or engineering degrees. If English is not your 1st language, then we require IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.

Course modules

Core modules: Research methods in finance (empirical methods in finance); risk management; asset pricing; derivative securities; financial modelling; mathematical research techniques using Matlab; postgraduate mathematics preparation; dissertation. Optional modules include: Audit theory; bank strategy and risk; behavioural finance; cases in corporate governance; corporate finance; corporate reporting and analysis; derivative securities; e-commerce; exchange rates and international finance; financial decision making; financial modelling; fixed income securities; industry expert lectures in finance; international financial reporting; international management accounting; modern banking; portfolio management; postgraduate mathematics preparation; risk management; strategy and accounting; trading global financial markets.

Assessment methods

Combination of written coursework, end-of-term tests, practical and laboratory work (where appropriate) and end-of-year exams. During the summer, students work on a dissertation or individual project included in their final grade.
