Political Science

The course gives a general overview of the core topics but students have a wide choice of modules. Graduates from this course can expect to find jobs in market research, the media and central or local government. It also provides a foundation for further research in political science.

Entry requirements

Our applicants should have a 1st, 2.1 or high 2.2 degree (or equivalent) in a relevant social science like politics, international relations, economics, political economy or sociology. Degrees from other subjects may be considered where there is evidence of some mathematical training, statistical background and relevant work experience, although you will be required to submit a personal statement with your application form. If English is not your 1st language, then we require IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.

Course modules

Stage 1 modules include: Advanced research methods; dissertation; theory and explanation in political science. Optional modules include: Advanced research methods: British political parties; comparative politics of human rights; conflict resolution; contemporary theories of justice; democracy, citizenship and constitutions; European integration and European politics; global and comparative politics; human rights and political theory; ideology and political discourse; international negotiation; international security studies; political behaviour; political economy; political explanation; political theory; research design; research seminar in political theory and methods; the analysis of conflict and peace; the analysis of public opinion; theories of international relations; theory and explanation in political science.

Assessment methods

Assessment methods include written coursework, assignments, end of term tests and an exam at the end of the year.
