Core modules seek to provide an in-depth investigation of the grammatical system and the sound system of English. In addition, our specialist options cover a wide range of topics related to English, including: Dialectal and social variation; language change; phonetics; pragmatics and conversation analysis.

Entry requirements

Our applicants should have a 1st, 2.1 or high 2.2 degree, or equivalent, in a relevant subject. If English is not your 1st language, then we require IELTS 6.5 with 6 in writing or TOEFL iBT88.

Assessment methods

Typically involves written coursework, class tests and practical testing. Dissertation grade is also included in final grade.
